- The Role and Standing of Chemical Fertilizers in the Sustainable Agriculture
In the human history, food has been produced by hunting and gathering, shifting agriculture, medieval rotation, livestock farming and then modern agriculture as it is today. The development of chemical fertilizer industry and use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides become the symbol of modern agriculture, which ended the era of hunger. Abundant food supply shifted human’s concern onto environment problems and food quality. Nevertheless, chemical fertilizers will continue to play its very important role in agriculture. Application of chemical fertilizers in combination with organic manure will be leading our sustainable agriculture in future.
- Can China Develop Organic Farming in Large Scale?
Organic farming, with low input, free in fossil energy and fossil energy products, is environment friendly agricultural production. It has gained considerable momentum in the last 30 years and becomes one of the hot topics in recent years. There is a tendency claiming that the times of organic farming is coming. This article based on the current situation of organic farming in China and abroad, objectively analyzed its advantages and disadvantages, discussed the problems and challenges encountered, and prospects of organic farming in China. Owing to the fact that China has large growing population and limited arable land resources, food security is therefore an eternal subject. As a result, Organic farming can never replace the conventional farming in China in any large scale.
- Development of Sustainable Agriculture and Soil Science in the Southwest China
Authors analyzed and evaluated the natural conditions for agricultural production in the southwest China, summarized the achievements of research and technology transfer in soil science in recent years, and proposed the goals and strategies in future. The research achievements and suggestions will serve the sustainable agriculture with new technology and the research with new thoughts in the southwest China.
