A rice field harvest day September 8 for IPNI-sponsored research in Nanchuan District, Chongqing. "The demonstration showed clear advantages from balanced use of controlled release urea over both balanced use of regular urea or farmer practice," explained Dr. Tu. A group of 200 who participated in the event included leaders from the Agricultural Committee of Chongqing, Chongqing Academy of Agricultural Sciences, several bureaus of Nanchuan District, ag-technicians, township leaders, farmers, and media people. After inspection of the trials, plots were immediately harvested for examination by the group. The 'enhanced' balanced fertilization treatment of 450 kg/ha of 20-12-8 complex fertilizer as a basal application and 75 kg/ha of regular urea as a side-dressing produced 10.5 t/ha or 16% more than the local farm practice of applying 133-45-0 kg/ha. The enhanced treatment generated an additional net income of CNY 1,067/ha. At another site, a one-time application of 120-60-75 kg/ha at rice transplanting, using controlled release urea as the source, produced a rice yield of 10.7 t/ha, or 2.2 t/ha (26%) higher than the treatment using regular urea. |
